Volunteer

The Healthy Food Bank, at its core, is a group of volunteers from all walks of life, bound by the belief that freedom from hunger and malnutrition is a basic human right.

But even more than that, we’re bound by the desire to fight for and protect that freedom, especially for those in our own cities and neighborhoods. And in doing that, we like to have fun, work on massive and awe-inspiring fundraising projects, and generally attempt solutions that everyone else says are impossible.

If that sounds like something you’d be interested in, we’d like to hear from you. This organization will ultimately succeed or fail on the strength of the people involved.

A brief disclaimer: volunteer work, at least at the Healthy Food Bank, is demanding and requires a certain type of person. That person is extremely driven, secure enough to be selfless, unflinchingly ethical, and utterly disgusted by mediocrity. Sound like you? Virtual work

Note that while we’re based in Toronto, we also work virtually with people from all over the world. Email, teleconferencing, instant messaging, message boards and social networking have completely changed the way people work, and we take advantage of those tools to work with the best people, no matter where they’re located.

So if you’re in the Toronto area, great; if not, as long as you’re a good fit and have a phone, internet connection or carrier pigeon, we’ll find a way to work together.

Expertise in demand

We’re always looking for top performers and up-and-comers in the following areas of expertise. We’ve got exceptional people working in each of these fields, so you’ll be joining an all-star team. Keep in mind, though, that this list is far from comprehensive, so if you can offer something not seen here, please contact us directly and let us know.

  • Sales & Marketing: Just as in a for-profit business, business development is critical. Anything not growing is dying, so we’re always looking for new ways to close deals, raise money and reach people.
  • Sponsor & Donor Relations: Sponsors and donors are our customers, and the lifeblood of our organization. Taking care of the people who help us help those in need is of critical importance.
  • Public & Media Relations: Getting our message heard by the public is an absolute prerequisite, and perhaps the greatest (and most fun) challenge we face.
  • Government Relations: Both the US and Canadian governments have countless agencies, regulations, funding programs and social programs to sort through and integrate with, and doing so properly means getting much more done much faster.
  • Web Design & Application Programming: HFB operates almost entirely online, and we’re developing a number of applications to help us do things exactly as we want them done. Wanted: computer science gurus.
  • Accounting & Tax Preparation: Running a federal NPO is much like running a public corporation, and in some ways more exacting. What we do with our books and finances ultimately determines whether we gain and keep the public trust.
  • Legal Counsel: The body of law concerning the non-profit sector is complex, and requires experienced counsel to navigate through it, especially since we operate in both Canada and the United States.
  • Research in Nutrition, Socioeconomics and Public Health: Our advocacy and spending programs depend to a large extent on the work done by our volunteer researchers, who scour the literature to expand our understanding of the hunger problem and to craft our solutions to it.

The Healthy Food Bank is a non-profit organization that provides nutritious staples like fruits, vegetables and whole grains to people in need around North America. We believe that people deserve good health, not hunger — no matter what circumstances they were born into. If you agree, please help us: 100% of the money you donate will be used to buy good food for someone who can't afford to eat today.
